WE CAN

We can labour, listen, learn and laugh

and love and live and give as best we can.

We can teach and share and care

and let go of the past

whilst always holding fast

to the value and the dignity of human life,

no matter what its station.

We can learn from all that’s been,

yet live right here in present tense

and share our gifts with all, with grace

and do it now – before our strength

has gone.

And so we are lucky men – my sons.

We are lucky women – my daughters.

And this world – because of us -

will be a lucky world.

History:

I wrote this poem 6 years ago, each verse started with the words “If you”, in a manner similar to Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem “If”.  Following my attendance at a Landmark Forum, in October 2002, I changed the start of each verse to “I can”.  Ironically the concept “If” was removed as there no longer seemed to be an impediment to these things now happening.

Following my attendance in the November 2002 Landmark Advanced Course (which I would highly recommend to anyone), I changed the beginnings of the verses from “I can” to “We can”.

This poem may be reproduced without permission, preferably complete with the above notes.

THE POSSIBILITIES

This may – or may not strike a chord with you.- some bits might, some not – which is just fine.

Let’s not just dwell on the poems of the past –  let us live now with the poems of the future. Poems of hopes and dreams that we invent, without the burden of what’s been.

As we clear the past we make a space.

To take no action leaves the void to fill – with more of just the same.

We now know that we can fill that space instead, with new possibilities and poems of our choosing.

Sharing these – lets them be a part of our communal consciousness and thus more powerful.

Let your top 10 become our top 100.

Have them be brief in noble form, not for ourselves as units – but for us all as Group – of which we are all part.

To clear the past, walk down the lane of memories – of childhood and of friend – and foe – and those who’ve left us.  They are gone – but our stories of them stay.

Be gently present to them ‘til the anger, hurt and sadness dissipates and disappears.  Forgive – move forward and let go.

We can complete all issues that are incomplete – be they in relation to relationships – or some large or petty item that we stole or took possession of and that was never ours.  And let go too – the habit of  “I’m right (or weak or victim)” and of judgment – for we may find that we, in fact were wrong.

Let’s thus reduce the power of that magnet of the past.

The possibilities that we create become our magnet of the future.

Let’s hold with this and be drawn forth – to achieve our dreams and those of others too.

Stay gently focussed on your vision of the life you want to live and keep extra room for magic on the way.

And as we listen to those who are struggling, let us not try to fix them – but to instead to stay gentle and quiet and visualise in them perfection that they cannot see themselves – until their anger and / or fear dissipates or the right words come from our mouth and hearts – or from a Heart which is greater than ours.

We are not just a names pinned to our chests – we are possibilities that can become reality.

Today I am the possibility of Love, and Healing and Transitions.

Tomorrow I may be the possibility of Compassion, Strength, Vision, Empowerment, Freedom, Courage, Listening and Support – but then – why should I wait – when I could be these things today!

And do not keep it to yourself – for if you do you will not have it.

Share it with the world because you love it – and the more you give away the more you’ll have.
