Sustainability Having a future for us and future
generations As a young child, I lived in Ardmona, a fruitgrowing area in central Victoria, Australia. Years of irrigation of the orchards has caused salt to build up in the underground water table. I feel sad as I see how many native trees are dying. I often wonder what the world will be like for my daughter. Already, in my life time, I have seen many beautiful trees removed from the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Yet I also have seen some stinking pollution cleaned up in Frankston and Richmond. I am concerned about the effect my lifestyle has on the physical environment. I am also considering what effect I have on the social environment in which I live. I would like to be able to use resources less wastefully, for example the use of water. When I turn on the shower and see water going to waste, I think there has to be a better way. During the water shortage, my brother has installed plumbing which diverts this water and the rinse water from his washing machine to water his lawns and garden. I have never seen his lawns so green in summer before! I enjoy researching energy conservation, water recycling, solar heating and solar power I would love to live in a sustainable house which makes best use of the sunshine, rain, water and other resources. I particularly enjoyed talking with a friend whose family has installed solar power generation panels on the roof of the large building on their property. They said how much they enjoyed seeing their electricity meter turning backwards as the energy they were receiving from the sun was being fed into the electricity supply grid.
